TREX PLASTIC CHALLENGE UPDATE
We have collected 593 pounds of plastic film towards our goal of 1000 pounds for the fourteenth bench which will honor Lori Muse Gurney and the club’s 95th anniversary. To date, 11,740 pounds of plastic film (over 5.5 tons!) have been removed from the waste stream since we started this project in February of 2023, delivered to Shaw’s Supermarket, and heading to Trex Company for recycling. Please continue to bring your plastic film to the Springfield Town Library. NOTE: We need volunteers to help sort the plastic at the Library. For more info, contact Alan.

PROGRAM:
Aaron Bennett, DO, (left) and David Lewis, MD, shared how Springfield Hospital provides advanced surgical care for the community. Their talk highlighted the hospital’s expertise in Gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, which treats conditions of the digestive tract including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and rectum.
The doctors explained that GI surgery is used to address issues such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and bleeding. Common procedures include colonoscopies, gallbladder removal, gastric bypass, and appendectomy. Many of these surgeries can now be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, which typically support faster recovery and reduced discomfort.
They also emphasized the importance of aftercare, including proper incision care, pain management, and ongoing monitoring to support long-term health, while noting possible complications like infection or digestive issues.
Bennett and Lewis underscored that Springfield Hospital has the resources and skilled staff to meet the surgical needs of the greater Springfield community.
