President Sue welcomed all to the May 19, 2026 club meeting held at the Springfield Area Parent Child Training Center.  For the thought of the day, she offered this quote attributed to St. Augustine: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

The weekly prize of $5 was won by Ed who gave it back to club. The big raffle grows to $228 and only 11 cards left.

Dr. Lisa Mobus presented her second talk on her Fulbright program in Colombia. The Riverside Middle School teacher visited the South American country from February to July last year through the Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program. Lisa previously spoke to Rotary about her education research program; in her more recent appearance, she talked more generally about Colombia, its geography, art, politics and people.         

 

Lisa shared several photographs showing the differences in climate between Bogota (cool and rainy), where she lived, and Medellin (sunny and warmer). She also showed photos of the country’s cathedrals and churches, statues, and colorful artwork.

 

In response to questions about how Americans are treated in Colombia, Lisa said she never felt any animosity. She did relate that she was warned about areas she should not travel alone, or at night. But she never did feel unsafe, she said.
