The15th bench was assembled and given to Union Street School. We have collected 946 pounds of plastic film towards our goal of 1000 pounds for our 16th bench which will be donated to the Springfield Lions Club Dog Park. To date, 14,097 pounds of plastic film (over 7 tons!) have been removed from the waste stream since we started this project in February of 2023, delivered to Shaw’s Supermarket, and heading to Trex Company for recycling. Please continue to bring your plastic film to the Springfield Town Library. NOTES: 1. Bench 17= VFW. 2. Bench 18=Elm Hill School. 3. NOTE: We need volunteers to help sort the plastic at the Library. The weekly prize of $7 was won by John. The big raffle grows to $200 and only 16 cards left.
PROGRAM:
Jeff Burnham, chief of the Springfield Police Department, provided an overview of current initiatives within the police department and discussed the evolving public safety needs of the Springfield community. His presentation highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to community policing, collaboration with local organizations, and efforts to maintain public trust while addressing modern policing challenges.
A key focus of Burnham’s remarks was Project ACTION, a collaborative initiative involving social service agencies and community members working together to positively impact the Springfield community. He explained that Project ACTION was originally launched in 2014 in response to an increase in violence and drug activity in town, and was relaunched in 2023 to renew and expand those efforts. The initiative emphasizes coordination among partners to address root causes of crime and improve overall quality of life. You can learn more about this successful initiative click here.
Rotarians had the opportunity to ask questions following the presentation, leading to a discussion about local public safety concerns, community outreach efforts, and the need for a youth resource officer.
