Trex Plastics Challenge Update
The Springfield Rotary Club collected 375 pounds of plastic film towards our goal of 1000 pounds of plastic film for the tenth recycled bench that will be given to Elm Hill School. To date, 7,519 pounds of plastic film (over 3.7 tons!) have been removed from the waste stream since we started this project in February of 2023, delivered to Shaw's Supermarket, and heading to Trex Company for recycling. Please continue to bring your plastic film to the Springfield Town Library.

President Deb welcomed all to the Dec. 10, 2024 club meeting held at our new location, Springfield Area Parent Child Training Center. For the thought of the day, she offered this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what lies within us out into the world, miracles happen.”
John: $2100 was raised for Springfield Human Society which was matched by Bibens Ace Hardware.

The weekly prize of $6 was won by Bruce Johnson who turned it back to club. The big raffle now grows to $59.
PROGRAM:
Bruce Johnson, chair of the Airport Commission, discussed the history of the Hartness State Airport at the recent meeting of the Springfield Rotary Club held at the Springfield Area Parent & Child Center Training Center. Hartness State Airport is a transportation hub that offers services such as flight training, aircraft maintenance, and fueling. It features a single paved runway (5,498 feet long) suitable for small aircraft and private jets, the second largest in Vermont. The airport has a rich history. In 1919, James Hartness, an inventor, entrepreneur, and Vermont governor, donated land to create the first airfield in Vermont. The airport was originally called the Springfield Airport. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh landed his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, at the airport after his first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He spoke to a crowd of around 30,000 people. During World War 2, the Civil Air Patrol used the airport for training exercises and coastal patrols. In 1959, the airport was renamed Hartness State Airport. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Hartness was one of the busiest airports in New England. The airport is owned and operated by the State of Vermont. It is managed by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), which oversees its maintenance and development. Hartness State Airport remains an important resource for the Springfield region, contributing to the local economy and preserving its historical ties to aviation. The Airport Commission is looking into an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s visit. To learn more about the Airport Commission, click here.
