Trex Plastics Challenge Update
 
The Springfield Rotary Club collected 513 pounds of plastic film towards our goal of 1000 pounds of plastic film for the eleventh recycled bench. To date, 8,657 pounds of plastic film (over 4.25 tons!) have been removed from the waste stream since we started this project in February of 2023, delivered to Shaw's Supermarket, and heading to Trex Company for recycling. Please continue to bring your plastic film to the Springfield Town Library. NOTE: We are in need of volunteers to help sort the plastic at the Library. For more info, contact Alan.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

President Deb welcomed all to the Feb. 11, 2025 club meeting held at the Springfield Area Parent Child Training Center.  For the thought of the day, she offered this quote attributed to John D. Rockefeller:  “The secret of success is to do the common things uncommonly well."

BOWL OF LIFE: (members put three things about themselves on paper and place into a bowl and then we try to identify the member) 

This member's clue was: "I still hold the record for Prouty Double Century" — Rod Arnold 

HAPPY EVENTS: 

  • Alan: Being here with fellow Rotarians

  • Marty: The Springfield DPW's fast work to repair a water main break a block away from his house without affecting his water.

  • Marty: Manassas Rotary Foundation's $3000 donation to the BEAR Project at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

  • Deb: Beginning her exercise program

  • Deb: Her grandsons received handcrafted cowboy gifts

  • Ed G: Sister-in-law's birthday

  • Ed G: Grandson's 10th birthday

  • August: Picking up a cow that will feed several food pantries

  • Sue: Senior Solutions being recognized as one of the best places to work

  • Sue: Kansas City losing

  • Jeff: Lisa's visa arriving just in time

  • Jeff: Lisa arriving safely in Bogata

  • Jeff: Not starving so far with Lisa away

RAFFLE:

The weekly prize of $8 was won by John. The big raffle now grows to $93.

PROGRAM:

 
 
Alan Englander talked about the need to pivot and adapt, recognizing that what seems unrelated can often be very related. He started out on a career of medical microbiology and pivoted to environmental and land-use projects. Although semi-retired, he maintains his credentials as a LEED Accredited Professional.
 
 
Michelle Chamberlain talked about Rotary goals, service, fellowship, and the 4-way test.
 
 
Brooklyn-born Ed Grossman talked about his career as an educator that included several years teaching deaf students.
 
This bulletin attempts to give a gist of the meeting.  However, it is always better to attend.  If you have any complaints about the contents of this bulletin...
